A couple of long days, especially Saturday with a 5.30 a.m. landing and not being able to check in until 3.00 p.m.!!! After breakfast at the hotel we set off for Hyde Park Corner. Lots of a Duke of Wellington stuff, including No. 1 London (Google it!).
Then Buckingham Palace, Downing St and Whitehall and Westminster Sq. Then a tube to the Natural History Museum and a walk back to the hotel through Hyde Park, past Kensington Palace – and no, we didn’t see Harry, Wills or Kate & Meaghan!. Fish & chip dinner but the kids were so tired most ate very little.
Day 2 and, after a good nights sleep they awoke a little fresher. Tube to the Tower with a resting quick stop at Monument of the Great Fire. Then: Roman Walls: Norman castles: executions and Regal politics: ravens and the Crown Jewels and Henry VII’s armour. He was a big man toward the end, And a wonderful and moving video in the Tower on the ceramic poppies.
Time then became pressing so we lunched and jumped on a river taxi to Embankment, by-passing the Globe and St Paul’s. Leicester Sq followed, with a brief visit to St Martins in the Field crypt. M & M store was very popular! Piccadilly Circus, the Xmas lights of Regent St, AND Hamleys – the best toy store in the world I reckon.
Seville Row and Burlington Arcade followed, culminating in dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. And finally, a double decker bus trip back to the hotel ( with a minor diversion as I got us on the wrong bus!).
They now only have the Black Cabs to go and they will have done all 4 iconic London public transport systems. This they do tomorrow night after Mama Mia – with specific questions to ask the drivers!!!!
Harry Potter and Covent Garden tomorrow, then a Very early departure to Ypres on Tuesday.
