Broadford Secondary College

Battlefields Tour 2018

As our Broadford Secondary College students and staff head off on the adventure of a lifetime, it is timely to reflect on why a group of young Australians are travelling to the battlefields of France and Belgium and why they have researched local names of fallen soldiers and set out to find their final resting places in foreign lands.

Remembrance is not a hollow word; it is a word embedded in our culture and displayed as a nation by our combined actions as we remember those who have fallen to preserve others’ rights to a peaceful life.

The Broadford Secondary College Community wishes the touring party a safe and rewarding tour.

Always remember that you are carrying the entire community with you and of course we will be following your journey with eager anticipation. Safe travel to all.

What really makes those numbers stand out is the thought of how much smaller the populations were. For Australia it wasn’t 60 000 young men out of a population of 20 000 000 it was out of 5 000 000. If you think that the percentage of the population that was young men was around 10%, then 60 000 died out of 500 000, and how many came back injured or suffering?
A lot of ‘realisations’ are in store for you as you as the staggering impact of WW1 and WW2 come into focus. You will enjoy the trip, but you will grow so much more.
    Keep the insights coming!
